The Difference Between American And European Piano Tutors

August 28th, 2011

Among American instructors Alexander Lambert takes high rank. With regards to over twenty-five years he has held aloft the normal of sound musicianship in the art of training and playing. A quarter of a century of thorough, conscientious effort along these lines must have left its impress on the entire rising generation of students as well as instructors in this country, and developed for the progress and advancement of American art.

It means considerably to have a native-born professor of such high aims living and working between us; an educator whom no support neither love of gain can influence nor render indifferent to the high aim ever in view. There is no escaping the sound and comprehensive study course of study for those who come under Mr. Lambert’s guidance. Scales must be, voluntarily or unwillingly, the daily bread of the player; the hands must be put in good shape, the finger joints rendered firm, the arms and body supple, before pieces are thought of. Technical study must continue along the whole course, hand in hand with piece playing; technique for its own benefit, outside the playing of compositions.

And why not? Is the technique of an art ever quite completed? Can it ever be laid away on the shelf and considered complete? Must it not generally be maintained in working order? “Have you not seen several changes in the aims of pupils, as well as within the conditions of piano instructing in New York, for the duration of the years you have taught here?” I asked Mr. Lambert, in the course of a current conversation.

“Several changes, it is true, I have observed,” he responded; “yet I must also say that the conditions attending piano instructing in America are unusual. We have a few excellent educators here, lecturers which could maintain their own place, and also are generally effective of producing completed performers. Nevertheless allow a pupil goes to the ideal educator in this nation, as well as the chances are usually which he or she is still seeking forward to ‘finishing’ with several European artist. These people tend to be not necessarily happy till they have guaranteed the foreign stamp of approval. Although this is accurate of the superior pianist, it is actually much more within proof within the mediocre player. He, too, is fantasizing of the ‘superior advantages,’ since he calls Then, of European study. He may have no foundation to construct on may not actually be able to perform a scale properly, however still thinks he must proceed overseas!

“An individual question if I believe students can obtain just as great teaching here as in Europe? That is a little difficult to answer off-hand. I totally believe all of us have got a few instructors in America as able as almost any on the other side; within several methods they are better. Regarding one thing they are morally better I repeat, morally much better. Regarding another they are usually a lot more comprehensive: they get much more attention in their pupils as well as will do more for them. Whenever such a teacher is observed, he certainly deserves the deep value and gratitude of the American pupil. But alas, he seldom experiences the appreciation. After he has done anything for the pupil fashioned him into a well-equipped artist, the student is apt to say: ‘Now I will go in another country for lessons with this or that popular European master!’ What is the result? He may never amount to anything may never be heard of afterward. On the other hand, I have students coming to me, which have been years along with a few of the ideal overseas experts, however who are full of faults of all kinds, faults that it takes me many years to correct. Some of them come with hard touch, with tense position and condition of arms and body, with defective pedaling, and with an absence of understanding of several of the fundamental concepts of piano playing.

String Muting, an Indispensable Lead Guitar Technique

May 11th, 2011

String muting is an additional technique that may allow you to define your own individual style. Muting will also enable you to create cleaner, more professional sounding guitar chords and also solos be reducing undesired sounds from your guitar.

You’ll find two varieties of string muting, the palm mute with your picking hand along with the string mute with your fret hand. They serve quite different purposes, but both are important to good guitar playing.

Fret-hand muting is particularly important when playing chords and power chords. The aim is to use part of you finger tips and fingers to mute the strings you don’t wish to include in the chord being played. For instance the C major chord is played from the 5th string to the first, but you are not supposed to hit the 6th string. I use the tip of my 3rd finger that is holding down the 5th string 3rd fret to rub up against the 6th string thus muting the string. I use this very same method as well with power chords, but additionally I use the fat part of my index finger to lightly lay on strings 1,2,three. With just enough pressure to mute the strings. The beauty is in the event you get just a little wild with your pick it still sounds acceptable. Fret-hand muting is used extensively.

Palm muting is a lot more commonly utilised in distorted rock songs. The technique requires resting the heel of your pick-hand palm on the strings as you pick. Many people rest it directly over the bridge, but you’ll be able to experiment with distinct positions for diverse sounds. Also try different levels of pressure to manage the level of muting. This method creates a percussive, muffled or chunky sound. Combine fast down strokes with palm muting in a variety of patterns with moderate distortion for sounds comparable to Metallica or other metal bands.

With lead guitar playing at times it might be neccesary to even further mute the fretboard. An easy way to achieve this is to simply fix a hairband round the neck of the guitar near the nut. Be certain to have the hairband tight enough to muffle the open guitar strings, but not too tight as to press the strings down on to the first fret. This basic tip can help “shred” style lead guitar players clean up their sound by muffling unwelcome open strings.

Both the fret hand muting and palm muting are very individual and stylistic techniques. Integrate practicing this method every time you pick up your guitar and before long you’ll master this essential skill.
