If you are like every other wannabe world-famous rock group out there, you probably drool at the thought of getting signed onto a record deal. But, in truth, the odds are against you.
But don’t feel sorry for yourself. It has nothing to do with your music. There is just simply too much noise out there in the music world. So how do you get yourself heard above the clatter? There are some tricks for the savvy marketer.
Take a moment to think about Lady Gaga, for example. She knows spectacle. Every show she puts on is purportedly a mass of visuals and showmanship. The same could be said for Pink Floyd. What they are doing is selling a good time. And that draws the crowds.
Now, what about your band. Are you making your shows into something to remember? Or are you simple standing there playing your instruments? Finally, is there any thing you could be doing to punch up your stage presence?
You should also think about your band’s image. Some bands and musicians make on the power of imagination alone. Every band has an image of some sort, though some are more powerful than others. The Sex Pistols were drunk and uncontrollable. Meanwhile, the Talking Heads were off-beat and cerebral. What is your band?
What is your band about? Do you have a common ideal or a theme that runs through the members? Some bands make a whole career out of politics while others are all about just having a good time. Where do you fit in?
You should make a point of being web savvy as well. Get someone to capture some video of your wild stage antics and post them on YouTube for the world to see. Some bands, such as OKGo make an entire career out of their YouTube presence. Others just benefit from the hundreds of hours of bootlegged footage that fans post on the web every day.
These are the basics: Fans, websites, bold shows and image. If you want to be the next Beatles, you’ll need to cultivate all of these. Remember that all fans are looking for the next big thing, and it could just be you.
