When Do You Have Too Much Stuff?

My older brother, now living in Sacramento, used to be what some might consider a garage sale addict. Every Saturday morning would find him plying the neighborhoods for hidden treasures in the form of others’ cast-offs. He always got ‘a good deal’ and almost everything he acquired found its way to the garage. The garage was FULL.

When he came home one day with a new collection I noticed several leaflet holders among the booty. I wondered what they were for and he mentioned they came at a great price – free. He’d surely find some use for them.

Asked what he had planned for these advertising aids designed to hold brochures he had an answer ready. He was going to use them to advertise his OWN garage sale. He was planning to get rid of some of these things he had accumulated through his garage-sale addiction. It sounded like a good plan.

Well, before too much time had passed he met the love of his life and moved out of his house and into hers. She already had all of the furniture and appliances they needed so I was fortunate in having all that left behind for me to use. I also inherited the garage full of garage sale castoffs, which he guaranteed he would deal with as soon as he could.

True to his word the garage was emptied and again useable within a few months. I was even able to get my car parked in there! That may have been the first time that particular car-parking area was used for its intended purpose… vehicle protection.

My brother was also nice enough to leave some of his clothes behind when he left. All neatly arrayed on sturdy wooden hangers, I was pleased to find we were still the same size (and still have similar taste in apparel). I wondered if he’d mind if I borrowed that leather jacket! The answer was, “No,” he didn’t mind and I was given permission to use anything left behind as though it were my own. That’s a very cool brother.

I’ve moved halfway around the world now, from Sacramento to Cebu, and all that stuff’s been long left behind. He had to come to the house, of course, and remove everything when it was time for me to go. That’s where the two storage lockers come into play. When you’ve got too much stuff to fit into your house, you might have TOO much stuff!

The Best Indie Debuts Since 2008

Indie rock music continues to make its imprint in the music world, and a deep one at that. With so many new bands emerging, it seems like this trend will continue to evolve, and fans are naturally grateful for it. 2008 and 2009 have been some great years, marked by many new bands making their way into the scene. This article will mention some of the best debut albums this period has brought us.

This article will only focus on three of the best debuts during this period, which will naturally be very challenging. There’s been such a great amount of new music during these last two years, and many exceptional new bands will be left out of this conversation.

Anyway, let’s give this a whirl. If you haven’t heard any of these albums for any reason, I’d recommend giving them a listen as soon as you possibly can.

I can remember the first time I heard For Emma, Forever Ago by Bon Iver. This was one of those albums that made an immediate impact when I first heard it, and well over a year later I’m still listening to this album regularly.

Justin Vernon is his real name, and he penned the entire album in a state of seclusion while in the woods of Wisconsin. The effort paid off big time, as Vernon is now a household name in the indie world.

The next album in my trio of newer debut classics is the first release by Vampire Weekend, a New York band with influences that span the world. One of the most unique blends of music I’ve ever heard, the band successfully mends styles that you never thought could go well together.

The final album on my list my very well be my favorite. If you’re already immersed in the indie world, there’s a very good chance that you’ve already heard last year’s debut album by Fleet Foxes. This was one of the most well received albums of 2008.

If you haven’t heard any of these albums, there’s no doubt in your mind that you’ll enjoy them.

Frank Sinatra And Nelson Riddle: How It Happened

Frank Sinatra is now known as the greatest popular singer in history and canonized as ‘The Chairman of the Board’. That wasn’t always the case, however. It’s easy to forget that there was a period of time when he was just another aging teen idol trying to stay relevant in the music business. He also had personal problems that are famous–particularly his tempestuous romance with actress Ava Gardner–as well as damaged vocal chords. There was a point after his ‘bobbysoxer’ success that he was in bad shape financially and professionally.

To make matters worse, the impresarios at Columbia Records were abusing his talent in an effort to revive his album sales. His pairing with producer Mitch Miller was particularly disastrous. The nadir of this unholy alliance was probably the recording of “Mama Will Bark”, where the greatest voice of the 20th century shared the microphone with a buxom actress named Dagmar (sort of a Rhonda Shear of her day) and some other ‘vocalist’ howling and barking like a dog in the background. Not surprisingly, Sinatra’s recordings with Mitch Miller were not a resounding commercial success and in 1952 he was dropped by Columbia.

His luck was soon to improve, however, as a number of his colleagues including former Tommy Dorsey vocalists June Hutton and Jo Stafford got him in the door at Capitol Records. This began a nine year relationship that produced some of the finest work of Sinatra’s career. Initially, Frank worked with June Hutton’s husband, Axel Stordahl. These sessions produced some decent music including “I’m Walking Behind You” but wouldn’t last long. Frank wanted to go in a different direction, which became a necessity when Stordahl left to take a gig with Eddie Fisher in New York. After a lengthy search for a replacement, Sinatra reluctantly agreed to work with an experienced big band conductor named Nelson Riddle. The Capitol Records executives were excited about the matchup, but Sinatra had to be convinced.

To say that the first Sinatra/Riddle session was a success is an understatement, and “I’ve Got The World On The String” is somewhat of a ‘shot heard round the world’ for Sinatra’s career and popular music in general. The Ted Kohler/Harold Arlen song is given new vibrancy with Riddle’s buoyant arrangement and Sinatra’s new found vocal maturity. The song was a modest commercial success at the time, reaching #14 on the single charts, but became a classic. It was also a favorite of Sinatra himself, and he continued to perform the song live, frequently as a show opener, for the rest of his life.

When examined in a modern context, Sinatra’s career ‘reinvention’ is almost mind boggling. It’s difficult to envision a star of today popular with the teenage set–like The Jonas Brothers for example–becoming accepted as a serious vocalist for adults. Sinatra not only became a critical and popular sensation, but would go down in history as arguably the most important entertainer ever in American popular culture. None of this would have happened were it not for the magical pairing of Sinatra with Nelson Riddle.
